The National Sports Council’s (NSC) outdoor gym initiative has reached La Digue, with the installation of a new outdoor fitness facility at the La Digue Playing Field, further strengthening the island’s sports infrastructure and creating more opportunities for residents to embrace an active lifestyle.
The latest addition forms part of the NSC’s continued drive to make physical activity more accessible by bringing exercise facilities directly into communities. Unlike conventional indoor gyms, outdoor fitness stations provide a free and accessible option for people to incorporate exercise into their daily routines, while making use of existing public sporting spaces.
The new outdoor gym is strategically located within the La Digue Playing Field complex, allowing it to complement rather than operate separately from the island’s existing sporting infrastructure.
A growing sporting hub
The development adds further value to what has become an important sporting hub on La Digue. The playing field complex already brings several facilities together in one area, including amulti-purpose court, tennis court, dormitory and the island’s main football field.
With the outdoor gym now added to the mix, the complex offers opportunities for a wider cross-section of the community, from organised teams and athletes using the sporting facilities to individuals looking for a convenient place to exercise and maintain their fitness.
The concentration of facilities in one location also creates greater potential for the complex to serve as a focal point for sporting activity on the island.
For the NSC, the objective is not simply to add another piece of equipment, but to continue developing spaces where sport, recreation and community activity can coexist.
Extending the use of the facilities
The improvements at the La Digue Playing Field have also gone beyond the installation of the outdoor gym.
Lighting has been installed at the complex, an important improvement which allows users to make greater use of the available facilities beyond daylight hours.
The additional lighting is particularly beneficial for people who may not be able to participate in physical activity during the day because of work, school or other commitments. It also gives sporting groups greater flexibility when scheduling training and recreational activities.
Together, the improved lighting and additional fitness equipment contribute to making the complex a more functional and accessible sporting environment.
Renewed Baby Gym adds another dimension
The latest outdoor gym installation comes at a time when La Digue has also benefited from improvements aimed at younger members of the community.
The island has recently seen the renewal of its Baby Gym facility, providing young children with an improved environment in which they can be introduced to movement and physical activity from an early age.
The Baby Gym programme is an important part of the NSC’s wider Sports-for-All approach, which seeks to encourage participation across different age groups rather than focusing solely on competitive sport.
The combination of Baby Gym facilities and outdoor fitness equipment means that the island is increasingly able to cater for different stages of the community — from young children taking their first steps into structured physical activity to adults and older residents looking for accessible ways to stay active.
Taking Sports for All to the islands
The development on La Digue is also part of the NSC’s broader Sports-for-All philosophy, which places emphasis on ensuring that opportunities to participate in physical activity are available to people regardless of whether they are competitive athletes.
Outdoor gyms are particularly suited to this objective because they can be used at an individual’s own pace and according to their level of fitness. They can accommodate people looking for a simple way to stay active as well as those incorporating strength and conditioning into a more structured fitness routine.
By extending the initiative to La Digue, the NSC is also ensuring that the benefits of its community fitness programmes are not concentrated on Mahé alone.
Investing in healthier communities
The development of sports facilities is increasingly being viewed as an investment not only in sport but also in community well-being.
Accessible facilities can encourage people to become more physically active, while sporting spaces can also provide opportunities for social interaction and community engagement.
For La Digue, where the community is closely connected and sporting facilities are concentrated in a number of key locations, the improvements to the playing field provide an opportunity to strengthen the role of sport in everyday community life.
The new outdoor gym therefore represents another step in the ongoing development of the island’s sports infrastructure.
With the outdoor gym, improved lighting, renewed Baby Gym, multi-purpose court, tennis court, dormitory and main football field now forming part of the wider sporting environment, the La Digue Playing Field is evolving into a more comprehensive facility capable of serving a broader range of sporting and recreational needs.
The latest development reinforces the NSC’s commitment to bringing sport closer to communities and creating facilities that can be used by people of all ages. For La Digue, the message is increasingly clear: sport and physical activity are not confined to the playing field — they are becoming an integral part of community life.
