Seychelles reaffirmed its dominance in regional sailing at the 13th Commission de la Jeunesse et des Sports de l’Océan Indien (CJSOI) Games, completing a clean sweep by winning both the boys’ and girls’ categories.
In the boys’ class, Joshua Alcorl claimed top honours after a consistent performance across five days of intense competition. His teammate, Deandro Larue, secured the silver medal, ensuring Seychelles occupied the top two spots on the podium. The bronze medal went to Mauritius, whose sailor managed to edge out the rest of the field.
The girls’ event was equally impressive for the host nation. Ella Constance dominated the fleet with Reunion taking silver to deny Seychelles an identical 1-2 finish, as Teryl Gerry had to settle for bronze
The final results meant local sailors had once again proved that the Seychelles archipelago remains the undisputed powerhouse of the sport in the region.
The competition format saw sailors take to the water twice daily over the course of five days, testing not just their technical skills but also their endurance and tactical awareness. Out of ten scheduled races, each competitor’s best nine results were taken into account for the final standings — a system designed to reward consistency while allowing for one dropped result in case of mishaps.
Speaking after the event, the Seychelles coach Rodney expressed immense pride in his team’s performance. “The best possible outcome was to secure first and second place in both categories, which we nearly achieved. There was no realistic possibility of taking all three medals in each category due to entry limitations, but the results we delivered were outstanding,” he said.
Seychelles’ continued dominance in sailing at the CJSOI Games is no coincidence. With year-round access to ideal sailing conditions, strong grassroots programmes, and a track record of producing internationally competitive sailors, the host nation has developed a winning formula that consistently outpaces its regional rivals.
This latest triumph further cements Seychelles’ status as the yardstick for sailing excellence in the Indian Ocean region. As the young sailors return to training, attention will now turn towards
maintaining this high standard and preparing the next generation to carry the torch in future regional and international competitions.
